Church Newsletter Confronts Changing Nature of Olympia’s Homeless

“No Tresspassing,”

Please take a look at the article on page 4 of The Voice, a Newsletter from the United Churches of Olympia. This must have been a difficult, but necessary article to write.  This is a testament to the changing nature of the homeless population in Olympia and why placement of a low-barrier shelter requires careful consideration.

An excerpt: “There is a higher rate of drug abuse … They are not respectful. They do not value our hospitality in the manner we have known. And it is unsafe for our staff, for our members and especially for our children. As committed as we are to homeless ministry, we cannot do so at the risk of our own safety. When members of the homeless community cannot honor our shared covenant, we have to draw a boundary. ” 2013-10-Voice
